Join a unique team of engineers and astronomers as we prepare, launch, track, and retrieve a scientific payload sent to the stratosphere aboard a high altitude balloon! High altitude balloons are unmanned balloons, usually filled with helium or hydrogen, that are released into the stratosphere, reaching between 70,000 to 110,000 feet before they burst, parachuting their payload back down to Earth. These balloons are typically used to study weather, but are becoming increasingly popular with both amateurs and professionals as a platform for other kinds of experiments in the upper atmosphere. Team members will gain valuable hands-on experience with electronics, programming microcomputers to collect data from a variety of sensors, building payloads, using a variety of cameras, planning flight paths, and flying balloons. A special space balloon launch day with the Edge of Space Sciences group is scheduled for Saturday, August 11, 2018 . Please note: This event is optional, and ALL participants attending the July launch are responsible for their own transportation. Participants do not have to be present for the launch day to receive data; however, it’s highly recommended – it’s too cool to miss! The launch is planned to take place on the eastern plains near Limon, Colorado, but the specific location is subject to change.
Registration for this class closes on Sunday, July 29th at 11:59pm. If you wish to register for this class after that date, please call 303-492-7188.
Please note: Transportation to the balloon launch site will not be provided. Participants must arrange their own transportation. Carpooling is highly recommended. Additionally, the cost of this class includes extensive materials fees, balloon tracking services and all logistics surrounding the launch of each mini satellite.
